Art, Sustainability, and the Rebirth of Saugerties: Rosemary Chase’s Mural Inspires New Attention on the Extraordinary Landing at Esopus Icehouse Community
Original Mixed-Media Painting Now Featured Inside One of Saugerties’ Most Distinctive New Townhomes
SAUGERTIES, NY — Following the public response to her recently gifted quilt-inspired mural in Saugerties, mixed-media artist Rosemary Chase is drawing new attention to the remarkable story behind the community that inspired it: the newly constructed luxury townhomes at Landing at Esopus Icehouse.
In January 2025, Chase gifted her large-scale mural to the Town of Saugerties, where it now faces the front of the Landing at Esopus Icehouse property. The mural was featured in Hudson Valley One and quickly became a visual
landmark celebrating community, history, and craftsmanship. Now, the original mixed-media painting that inspired the mural has been installed and is offered for sale inside one of the stunning three-story townhouses— creating a rare intersection of fine art, sustainable architecture, and Hudson Valley living. “These homes completely took my breath away,” said Chase. “The combination of environmental consciousness, historical sensitivity, craftsmanship, and the extraordinary natural surroundings creates something truly unique.
I felt this was the perfect environment to offer my original painting.” Developed by John Mullen, the Landing at Esopus Icehouse community reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and preservation. The stone and wide oak flooring were sourced locally and crafted by John himself. Built in accordance with The Village of Saugerties Historic Commission requirements, the approximately 2,400-square-foot residences blend modern luxury with industrial and regional character, including select repurposed materials incorporated throughout the design.
One of the project’s most innovative features began long before construction:
Mullen implemented vertical geothermal well drilling across the property, creating dramatically reduced heating and cooling costs while minimizing environmental impact.
The homes also overlook the breathtaking Esopus Creek, where ongoing environmental maintenance helps preserve unobstructed waterfront views and the natural beauty surrounding the property. Inside, expansive black-trimmed windows frame the landscape while stone fireplaces, wide-plank wood flooring, and soaring interiors create a
sophisticated yet grounded atmosphere that reflects the Hudson Valley itself. The installation of Chase’s original painting inside one of the residences adds another layer to a project increasingly being recognized as more than a
